Amico: The Life of Giovanni Battista Viotti
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.95 $Giovanni Battista Viotti was unquestionably the most influential violinist of his time, and his style continues to pervade to the present day. The last great representative of the Italian tradition that Corelli began, Viotti is often considered the founder of the modern or 19th-century French school of violin playing. In Amico: The Life of Giovanni Battista Viotti, author Warwick Lister provides the first complete biography in English of this continuously significant violinist. Much of the documentary material Lister cites is previously unknown or not translated. Lister's biography takes the reader on a fascinating journey over the European continent and into the musical culture of the late 18th century. Born one year prior to Mozart and dying three years before Beethoven's death, Viotti rose from the humble origins of a blacksmith's son in a village near Turin, Italy, to international fame. His multifarious career as a concert performer, composer, teacher, opera theater director, and impresario was played out against the backdrop of a dramatically changing world - he served as a court musician for no less a figure than Marie Antoinette before founding an opera house in Paris. Viotti also knew tragedy as well as success: he was forced to flee the French Revolution, he was exiled from England for an extended period based on suspicions of certain Jacobin tendencies, his attempt to establish himself in business met with failure, and he died heavily in debt. Lister concludes Amico by coming to grips with the very things that account for Viotti's greatness and influence: the technical aspects of his violin playing and compositions. With its extensive documentary research and the inclusion of translations of various archival documents, this is the essential English-language biography of Viotti, a significant addition to the libraries of students and scholars of 18th and early 19th century music, as well as violin performers, students, and instructors.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The complete etchings / Gesamtkatalog der Radierungen / Catalogue raisonné des eaux-fortes.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 117.89 $Piranesi’s fantastic worlds: The great 18th century architectural artist and master engraver “Piranesi was as savage as Salvator Rosa, fierce as Michelangelo, and exuberant as Rubens... he has imagined scenes that would startle geometry and exhaust the Indies to realize.” —Horace Walpole One of the greatest architectural artists of all time, and certainly the most famous copper engraver of the 18th century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is best known for his terrifyingly original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, Carceri d’Invenzione. In his own day, he was most celebrated for his Vedute, 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi’s romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway. Anyone who contemplates Piranesi’s etchings will confront the existential nightmare of human existence and its infinite mysteries. Text in English, French, and German

The Mind and Art of Giovanni Battista: Piranesi (Painters & sculptors)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.87 $Piranesi has a powerful appeal for our time. His brilliance as a graphic artist, his transformation of the European vision of Classical antiquity, and his themes of fantasy have been the focus of considerable study in recent years. But though these aspects are important for an appreciation of Piranesi's visual significance, they have tended to obscure other factors essential for a complete understanding of his unique achievement. In this copiously illustrated study, John Wilton-Ely - one of the world's foremost authorities on Piranesi - offers a full reappraisal of the complex personality of an astonishingly versatile artist. His book covers every aspect of Piranesi's life and work, emphasizing especially his importance as a pioneer of Roman archaeology, the high quality of his technical illustrations, and his role in the great Graeco-Roman debate of the 1760s. The author brings to life the Enlightenment world of the artist's ideas - fundamentally bound up with the birth of Neo-Classicism - and the search for an appropriately modern form of expression; and he shows the practical and influential form taken by these ideas in Piranesi's architectural projects, his designs for furniture and decorative schemes and his imaginative restoration of antiquities.

Giovanni Battista Moroni
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 84.89 $Acclaimed by some as one of the best portraitists of all time, Italian painter Giovan Battista Moroni (1522-1579) created penetrating images of the aristoc-racy of Bergamo, in which the sitters often gaze at the spectator with an unflinching directness. Admired in Italy since the 16th century, when Titian is said to have praised his portraits, Moroni did not achieve an international reputation until the 19th century and remains relatively little known. This handsome catalog encompasses Moroni's entire career. It includes portraits of all formats and styles, demonstrating not just Moroni's brilliance at capturing the elegance of his sitters and the fashions of the time, but also his realistic representation of Bergamo's society, which became a model for Caravaggio. The volume also includes Moroni's religious paintings, which also incorporate highly accomplished likenesses of their patrons, once again showing the striking psychological insight for which Moroni is acclaimed.Arturo Galansino, curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, has also curated exhibitions for the Louvre and the National Gallery, London. Simone Facchinetti is curator at the Museo Diocesano in Bergamo.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi : a critical study ; with a list of his published works and detailed catalogues of the prisons and the views of Rome.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.94 $Reprint of the 1922 edition. Cloth, Octavo. xii, 96pp. Frontispiece and 146 illustrations. Piranesi (1720-1778), Italian engraver and architect, is best known for his etchings of ancient and baroque Rome and the grandiose architectural constructions of his own imagination. In 1745 Piranesi's first real success came with his Carceri d' Invenzione, or Imaginary Prisons, 16 large plates that are often considered his masterpieces. Piranesi's next enterprise was to record the ruins of ancient Rome. It was to be the biggest project of his life. In 1756 Piranesi published his Roman Antiquities, four huge volumes containing over 200 folio plates. Hind's work is still one of the standard works on Piranesi. In all Hind describes 146 of Piranesi's work, including all the views of Rome, and the Carceri. Hind is invaluable for information on watermarks and states of each etching. He also provides information on dimensions, numbering, and publishers. Hind also provides a complite list of all the known works of Piranesi. He also provides a bibliography, and index, and illustrations of 124 the views of Rome.
